Morehead City

Edwin “Ed” Priest Oglesby Jr., 91, of Morehead City, North Carolina, passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Carteret Health Care.

A funeral service to honor Ed’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 14th at Parkview Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. John Carswell. Interment, with military honors, will follow at Bayview Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Ed was born on November 8, 1932, to the late Edwin Priest Oglesby and Dorothy Bedsworth Oglesby. Born and raised in Morehead City, Ed enjoyed living on the coast where he loved to fish and go boating and water skiing.

Immediately following high school, Ed enlisted in the United States Air Force, honorably serving his country for 4 years, earning various medals along the way. After the military, Ed worked for a few years at Sound Chevrolet before transitioning to civil service work at NADEPT. Retiring after 33 dedicated years, his final position was as an Aircraft Production Controller. Ed enjoyed a fruitful 37 years of retirement.

Those who knew Ed were keenly aware that the Lord was the strength and foundation of his life. His daily walk with the Lord was steady, always inspiring those around him to follow in the faith. A man of strong character, his integrity, joy, and commitment were seen in every aspect of his life. Ed was a faithful member of Parkview Baptist Church since 1971, where he served as a trustee, deacon, treasurer, and on the building and grounds committee.

A family man, through and through, his love for his wife and children was unwavering and evident to all. He married the love of his life, Doris Pace Oglesby, in 1957, and they had 67 wonderful years together before his passing. They were blessed with 2 children, Stephen and Shelly. Ed was an amazing father to his special needs son, Stephen. He spent countless hours loving and caring for him, which he did with great joy. While Stephen was his sidekick, Shelly was his heart and the apple of his eye.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Doris Pace Oglesby; children, Stephen Todd Oglesby of Morehead City and Shelly Oglesby Kangas of Raleigh. His pride and joy were his grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Kangas and fiancé Mark Franklin Ashcraft Jr. of Charlotte, NC, and Matthew Edwin Kangas and fiancé Giovanna Jeanne Conigliaro of Raleigh. Ed is also survived by his brother, Daniel Clark Oglesby of Morehead City; sister-in-law, Lucille Pace Winstead; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his sisters, Garnetta Gent, Marcy Lewis, Carolyn Giaimo, and Barbara Ann Hartness.
