Edward Charles Bates, 91, of Morehead City, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at Carteret Landing.

Edward was born on December 20, 1934, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late Edward and Julia Bates. A proud veteran of the United States Army, Edward went on to enjoy a long and fulfilling career on the open road as a truck driver for Edgecombe Metals. He was a dedicated, hardworking man who believed in giving his all to everything he did, a quality that was evident in every aspect of his life.

For more than 60 wonderful years, Edward shared a beautiful life with his sweetheart and beloved wife, the late Glenna Phyllis Bates. One of their favorite places to visit was the Chesapeake Bay and Virginia’s Eastern Shore, where they enjoyed many special times together. Those memories always remained close to Edward’s heart.

Edward had a lifelong love of learning and was an avid reader with a particular passion for history. He was especially fascinated by the Civil War and World War II, interests that led him to volunteer with the New Bern Preservation Society. He especially enjoyed lending a hand with the Civil War Battlefield, where he could share his appreciation for preserving the history of our past.

Edward loved being outdoors, fishing was one of his favorite pastimes and he was always happy to have a line in the water. He was also a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan who enjoyed cheering on his team.

Above all, Edward treasured his family. He will be remembered for his easygoing nature, strong work ethic, and the love he had for his family. He was a loyal and devoted husband, a loving and encouraging father, a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and a loyal friend.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his daughter, Cynthia Marie English and husband Daniel of Marlton, New Jersey; his son, Dr. Thomas Edward Bates Sr. and wife Eileen of Morehead City, North Carolina; grandchildren, Thomas Edward Bates Jr., Jason Paul Bates, William Jackson Bates, Sophia Helen Bates, Eric Edward English and wife Sam, and Courtney Nicole English; and great-grandchildren, Mable Joan English and Hank Edward English.

In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Glenna Phyllis Bates; his sister, Joan Hanhauser; and grandson, Shawn Daniel English.
