Doris "Dot" Meeks Johnson

Doris “Dot” Meeks Johnson, 94, of Morehead City, North Carolina went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at Carteret Health Care.

A memorial service to honor Dot’s life will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 2nd at First Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Darrell Williams. The family will receive friends one hour prior. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.

Dot was born on February 4, 1930, in Eden, North Carolina, to the late Tyler and Mary Meeks. A woman whose strong faith shone through every aspect of her life, Dot's commitment to the Lord was seen in her lifelong involvement in Church. There, she poured her heart into teaching Sunday School, helping with VBS, caring for the little ones in the nursery, and working with the Sun Beam Group.

Married to her beloved for 67 wonderful years, Dot and Edward shared a remarkable journey together. They worked diligently and raised their family in Raleigh until retirement beckoned a change of scenery. Later settling in Oriental, NC for two decades before eventually moving to Morehead City.

As a registered nurse, Dot's compassionate nature focused on providing pediatric care. She had a remarkable ability to nurture and care for others, whether through her nursing skills or in the kitchen where she excelled at cooking, sewing, and knitting for the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Dot had a special love of picking blueberries, she enjoyed canning and her culinary talents were renowned among family and friends. Her apple butter, Brunswick stew, chocolate pie, and legendary chocolate chip brownies brought joy to many.

An avid gardener and cherished member of the Crabtree Heights Garden Club, Dot appreciated nature's beauty. She delighted in learning from fellow gardeners while graciously sharing her own gardening wisdom. Fond of beach walks, her shell-collecting adventures along the shoreline brought her immense pleasure. In her early years, Dot enjoyed traveling with her husband, they were always ready to see new places and meet new friends.

Those remaining to cherish her memory are her loving daughter, Melissa Johnson Robinson and husband Robbie of Morehead City, NC; sons, Edward Mitchell Johnson of Signal Mountain, TN, and Mark Tyler Johnson and wife Denise of Wilmington, NC; sister, Preston “Pep” Hopkins of Eden, NC; brother, Olin Jackson Meeks and wife Hilda of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Lindsay Elizabeth Franklin, Edward Colin Johnson and wife Kirby, Tyler Early Johnson and wife Ashley, Jacob Logan Johnson and wife Amanda, and Edward Parker Robinson; and great-grandchildren, Edward Blevin Johnson, Salem Davis Johnson, and Sullivan Rhett Johnson.

In addition to her parents, Dot was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward Lee Johnson in 2018; sister, Alma Meeks Vestal; brother, Gerald Rogers Meeks; and daughter-in-law, Sue Blevins Johnson.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Youth Ministry Program at First Baptist Church, 810 Bridges St., Morehead City, NC 28557.
