Obituary

Delvin Sylvanus Huffstetler, 93, of Cape Carteret, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Carteret Health Care.

Delvin's service arrangements will be shared once finalized.

Delvin was born July 10, 1932, in Shelby, NC to the late Daniel and Ethel Huffstetler. As a young man he proudly served four years in the United States Navy, an experience that shaped his love of travel and lifelong appreciation for service.

After returning home, Delvin pursued his education and in 1959 earned his bachelor’s degree in pharmaceuticals from the University of North Carolina. For 65 years he faithfully served his community, building relationships with the people he helped and becoming a trusted presence in their lives.

Outside of work, Delvin believed life should be enjoyed. He was a devoted fan of the North Carolina Tar Heels and rarely missed the chance to watch a game. He loved traveling across the United States, always curious to see somewhere new and experience different places. Golf was one of his favorite pastimes, offering both challenge and camaraderie. He also had a deep love of reading and being entertained at the theater.

Delvin was a great cook and always had a special appreciation for good food, with one of his favorite dishes being shrimp and grits. Some of his most enjoyable dining experiences were in Charleston and Savannah, cities he loved to visit for their charm, history, and delicious food.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Mary Way Huffstetler; daughter, Sandra Kay Tatro (Keith) of Hamstead, NC; sons, Delvin Sylvanus Huffstetler (Lisa) of Fancy Gap, VA and Ricky K. Huffstetler (Deneen) of Hampstead, NC; brother, Palmer Huffstetler of Cherryville, NC; 5 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Delvin was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Gloria Pauline Huffstetler and his sister, Frances H. Mitchem.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethlehem Methodist Church for the Ramp Ministry, 728 Bogue Loop Road, Bogue, NC 28570.
