Charles "Chuck" Harold Sledge Jr.

November 14, 1944 — May 24, 2025

Morehead City

Charles “Chuck” Harold Sledge Jr., 80, of Morehead City, North Carolina, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Carolina East Medical Center, he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

His memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday May 31st at St. Peters United Methodist Church in Morehead City, NC, with Pastor Karl Zorowski officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Chuck was born on November 14, 1944, and is now reunited with his father, Captain Charles Harold Sledge Sr. (USMC-Aviator, whom he lost when he was 10 years old to the Korean War) and his beloved mother, Betty Shelton Sledge Ballou. He was a graduate of Morehead City High School Class of 1962. He was an exceptional athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball. He was also an excellent scholar graduating at the top of his class and serving in darn near every committee and organization the school offered. In 1962, Raleigh News & Observer named him First Team All East in football. He earned a full scholarship and was a letterman linebacker at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Chuck was a devoted father and friend of many…. especially his longtime buddy Danny McQueen, whom he met on a Morehead City little league baseball field playing on the “Small Fries”. He loved Boy Scouts of America and was a member of Troop 130.

Chuck graduated from UNC with a degree in Chemistry. He worked in real estate in Atlantic Beach, NC originally as Ballou & Sledge Realty and later as Chuck Sledge & Company Realtors.

Chuck loved trout fishing with his boys and buddy Alan Shelor at Hush Mouth Creek… his favorite sport was tennis where he managed to meet all of his wives on the court. He loved flying planes, running boats and making deals. He was famous for playing basketball like a linebacker in the local recreation league…. He loved quail hunting and taught all his boys how to handle a gun. He always said that everything in life is a “negotiation” and there’s nothing better than “Mother” Betty’s cookies and a good whistle!

Chuck was blessed to have his wife Tasma by his side in the later years of his life. They lived in Charleston, SC for 10 glorious years where they had many friends. She graced us all with her devotion and willingness to accept his family and he adored her and their dog Lily. In his final days Tasma’s mother, Bonnie McIntosh, was always there when we needed her. The Staff at Carolina East in New Bern were also exceptional.

In addition to his wife, Tasma Sledge, Chuck is survived by his 5 children, Chuck Sledge of Raleigh, NC, Kevin Sledge of Gales Creek, NC, Mitch Sledge of Raleigh, NC, Sarah Sledge Walden of Wilmington, NC, and Shelton Sledge of Morehead City, NC; his siblings, Rick Sledge and David Sledge both of Atlantic Beach, NC, and Mindy Ballou Fitzpatrick of Morehead City, NC; along with his 6 grandchildren, Hastings, Charles, Coley, Trevor, Olivia, Evey and Eli.

He loved his grandchildren more than anything in the world and was constantly involved in their lives…We will all miss him calling us “Candy Ass” and quoting from the movie “Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean” where Dad was fond of saying: “I might not be the toughest, but when the tough get together, they call me Captain!”

We Love You Dad and look forward to seeing you again one day in the Kingdom of Heaven….God bless us all.
