Carol Jean Brown Cutchin

Carol Jean Brown Cutchin, 91, of New Bern, NC, passed away on May 26, 2025.

Born April 30, 1934, in Hopewell, VA, she was the daughter of the late Burl and Fonnie Brown, and was predeceased in death by her husband of 46 years, Paul S. Cutchin, Jr.

Carol grew up in Suffolk, VA and graduated from Suffolk High School in 1950 and attended Flora MacDonald College in Red Springs, NC. She was a talented artist and worked as a hand-tint artist for O’Neal’s Studio in Suffolk, VA and later Olan Mills Studio.

She and Paul met on a blind date the evening of Thanksgiving 1955 and were married four weeks later on Christmas Day. They moved many times all over the southeast, including GA, MS and FL, later returning to Suffolk, VA as the owners and operators of Traveler’s Rest and The Dining Room Restaurant for many years.

Carol is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Paula Cutchin and Gary Herrmann of New Bern, NC, Dawn Cutchin and Bill Lassiter of Suffolk, VA; sons and daughters-in-law, Wally Taylor and Jill Howell Cutchin of Mission, TX and James Ryan and Anne Cutchin of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren Jacob and Zachary Herrmann and Rachel Herrmann Tackett, Natalie Cutchin Tacke, Miles, Michael, Benjamin and Paul Cutchin; and great-grandchildren, Grace Herrmann, Emma Jean and Mason Tackett, and Bradley and Magnolia Tacke.

She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Nancy Brown and Vern Russ of Canton, GA; nephew David Russ, also of Canton, GA; and her lifelong friend, Dawn Miller of Kill Devil Hills, NC.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on June 6, 2025, at Whitehead’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Smithfield, VA, officiated by the Rev. Rich Meiser.

Memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
