Obituary

Calvin Ellis Malpass Jr., 78, of Mount Olive, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 19, 2026, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House.

Calvin was born on August 24, 1947, in Mount Olive, NC, to the late Calvin and Eula Malpass.

Growing up Calvin worked on a tobacco farm where he developed a love for the outdoors that stayed with him throughout his life. He especially enjoyed gardening and took pride in cultivating and caring for his plants.

Gifted with a mechanical mind, he could often be found in the garage working on cars, earning the affectionate nickname "Grease Monkey" from those who knew him best. Whether repairing an engine or building model cars, he was always fascinated with the mechanics of the skill.

Calvin also enjoyed crafting furniture in his workshop, especially home crafts and tables. He wasn't afraid to tackle a project around the house, Calvin enjoyed figuring out how things worked and making them better. He was happiest when he was tinkering, fixing, or creating something with his hands.

In quieter moments, Calvin enjoyed watching classic western movies and spending time with those he loved. Above all, he was a devoted family man. Some of his most cherished memories were made gathered around the table at his mama's for Sunday dinner, sharing food, laughter, and time with family.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his daughters, Stephanie Hunt (Michael) of Seagrove, NC, Crystal Holland (Kenny) of Selma, NC, Michelle Knipe of Morehead City, NC, and Christina Gathings (Lynn) of Ernul, NC; son, Scotty Glass of Mount Olive, NC; brother, Ronnie Malpass (Emily) of Seven Springs, NC; 23 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Calvin was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris Malpass; sons, David Miller Jr. and Gary Malpass; brother, Mickey Malpass; and grandchildren, Codi Malpass and Jessica Moore.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Crystal Coast Hospice House, P.O. Box 640, Newport, NC 28570.
