Beverly Alice Sasser, 69, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

Born Beverly Alice Nelson on May 29, 1957, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, Beverly was the daughter of Charles Beverly “CB” Nelson and Lillie “Pearl” Lewis Nelson. As the daughter of an Air Force serviceman, her childhood took her across the country. During her father’s deployment to Vietnam, Beverly and her siblings stayed with family in Carteret County, where they later resettled permanently after his service. Once home, Charles “CB” took over the family’s music store and piano-tuning business, where the Nelson family became well known throughout the community.

Beverly graduated from West Carteret High School in 1976. She experienced both great joy and profound heartbreak growing up. She was preceded in death by her beloved younger brother, Charles Randall Nelson, who died tragically at the age of eight when Beverly was just thirteen years old, a loss that forever shaped her compassionate heart.

For 30 years, Beverly faithfully served as a civil-service employee at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point before retiring in 2015 after a career marked by dedication and hard work. During her time there, she worked as a supervisor at the Traffic Management Office, where she was loved and respected.

As a teenager, Beverly accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior, a decision that shaped the foundation of her life. Although she did not regularly attend church in her later years, her faith never wavered, and she never stopped loving the Lord. Her quiet faith remained a constant source of hope and comfort throughout her life.

In December 1981, Beverly married the love of her life, Wilbur Sasser Jr. Together they built a beautiful life and raised their three daughters in Havelock, North Carolina. As Wilbur served as the beloved head football coach of the Havelock Rams from 1979 until 2004, Beverly was his biggest supporter. Whether the game was at home or hours away, whether the weather was sticky hot or bitterly cold, she could always be found faithfully sitting on the 50-yard line, cheering on her husband and his Rams. Her support became as much a part of Friday nights as the game itself.

After losing Wilbur in 2017, Beverly found her greatest joy in her daughters and seven grandchildren. Being “Nana” wasn’t simply a title—it was her favorite role in life. She had a wonderfully silly, playful spirit and would do just about anything to make her grandchildren laugh. She loved dancing with them to “It’s Raining Tacos,” playing dress-up, hosting tea parties, making tinfoil hats and swords to fight aliens, driving up to the Walgreens drive-thru and pretending to order burgers and fries, and taking them cruising through the galaxy in their “spaceship,” which was really her Lexus. No matter what she was doing, she somehow managed to bring a smile to their faces, and she treasured every moment with them. Her children and grandchildren never doubted how deeply they were loved.

To know Beverly was to love her. She truly never met a stranger. She could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, and by the end of it, they felt like lifelong friends. Her gift for making people feel welcome left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. She especially cherished her closest friends, Ida Wright, Mitzi Temple, and Joyce Leonard, who brought her great joy and companionship throughout her life.

Above all else, Beverly was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She created a home filled with unconditional love and laughter. Her daughters always knew they had a safe place in her—someone they could call with news or simply because they wanted to hear her voice. She was their fiercest defender and dearest friend.

Beverly was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wilbur Sasser Jr.; her parents, Charles Beverly Nelson and Lillie “Pearl” Lewis Nelson; her brother, Charles Randall Nelson; her sister, Rhonda Nelson Williams; her mother-in-law, Christine Carter Clark; and several beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughters, Tara (Steve) Liszewski of Morehead City, North Carolina; Kelly (Steven) Shelton of Havelock, North Carolina; and Jessica (Bradley) Guthrie of New Bern, North Carolina. She is also survived by her very special nephew, Aaron Williams (Michael Dugay) of Raleigh, North Carolina, for whom she became a second mother after the passing of his own mother; her beloved sister, whom she affectionately called “Sissy,” Tressa Nelson Small of Milledgeville, Georgia; her cherished grandchildren, Stevan Liszewski, Camron Guthrie, Christopher “CJ” Hopkins, Lillie Liszewski, Bailey Ruth, Carter Guthrie, and Cohen Guthrie; along with many other beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Although our hearts are broken by her passing, we are forever grateful for the years we had with her.
