Obituary

Betty Lewis Morgan, 88, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House.

A memorial service to honor Betty's life will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, July 31st at First Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Nate Leonard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Betty will be laid to rest privately at Pineview Cemetery in Rocky Mount.

Betty was born on November 10, 1937, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, to the late Ishmal and Nell Lewis. After earning her bachelor's degree at East Carolina University, she began a fulfilling career in education, teaching English in the Newport School where she touched the lives of many students.

Betty loved the Lord, and her faith was the foundation of her life. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Morehead City, where she cherished her church family. She faithfully attended services and lovingly served her church as a deacon and a greeter.

Betty enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, including getting lost in a good book and spending time on her porch watching the boats go down Bogue Sound. She had a heart for serving others and was dedicated to her community, proudly serving as president of the Pilot Club.

Above all, Betty treasured her family. She loved cheering on her grandchildren at their many sporting events and was their biggest supporter. A true sports enthusiast, she was a passionate Tar Heel, Braves, and Redskins fan.

Those remaining to cherish her memory are her son, Michael Tod Morgan and wife Courtney of Trent Woods, NC; grandchildren, Katherine "Kate" Harper Morgan and Elizabeth "Ellie" Garrett Morgan both of Gainesville, FL, and Talley Grace Morgan and Michael Tod Morgan Jr. both of Trent Woods, NC; and special niece, Karen Lynn Lewis, and special great niece, Jasa Nicole Lewis, who were more like daughters to her.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bobby Harold Morgan; son, Mark Douglas Morgan; and brother, Merlin Cooley Lewis.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 810 Bridges Street, Morehead City, NC 28557.
