Bobbi Dennis Young, 89, of Morehead City, peacefully left this earthly life on May 5th, 2025, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport.
Bobbi was born in the Old Morehead City Hospital on January 20th, 1936, to Burl and Dorothy Kirk Dennis. Her only sibling, brother Johnnie Kirk Dennis, passed in October. She was married to Wayne Young of Little Rock, Arkansas, who is deceased. Bobbi is survived by her niece Joni Dennis of Atlantic Beach, and several younger cousins.
She grew up in Dog Town, a part of Beaufort where most families owned more than one dog, and attended Beaufort Elementary School through 12th grade. In those days, growing up in Beaufort meant you knew everyone who passed you by, and a stranger would stand out like a sore thumb.
After graduation, she ventured to New York City to become a runway model. After her stint in New York, she ventured to Vermont to help run a hotel during ski season. She couldn’t ever get over the fact that they didn’t know what collards or grits were in Vermont, so she taught the French Chef how to cook them so she’d feel more at home.
After returning to Beaufort, she started working with Dr. Rod Lancaster, our local veterinarian, which kindled her love for animals even more than she already had. She worked for Dr. Lancaster until the love of her life, Wayne Young, a pilot, whisked her away to Memphis, Tenn., after the Vietnam War, to help start a little overnight package delivery service called Federal Express. Her life was mostly spent in Memphis and traveling the world with Wayne and close girl friends, but always coming back to Carteret County in the summers to dig her toes in the sand and dance the nights away when Mary Lou and Ray owned Mary Lou’s and later at Memories Shag Club in Atlantic Beach, always keeping those old friendships kindled on the dance floor.
Bobbi was a trendsetter in many ways. Not only was she one of the the first people to be inducted into the Shagging Hall of Fame and considered one of the best dancers on the East Coast, but was a DJ, when women weren’t DJs. She was a DJ at WMBA, WMBL, and the Pavilion on Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. Her love of fashion was always a top priority, and she worked at the Inside Out Boutique for many years as her second job.
Bobbi and Wayne moved back to Carteret County in early 2000, part-time and full-time, a few years later. She loved to throw clam bakes and dinner parties and laugh. Her sense of humor, along with that beautiful head of white hair, will always be what people remember her most for.
Beyond looks and love, her biggest attribute was maintaining friendships that had lasted for over 70 years. Her oldest friends… “The Beaufort Girls” still met for lunch until the week before she went into hospice. She always said having those kinds of friends would get you through anything. We should all be grateful to have just that. She will be deeply missed, and her laughter and jokes will be in our memories forever.
A very sincere thank you to the Crystal Coast Hospice House staff for their compassionate and loving care. They are God's angels who ensure our loved ones get the care and respect they deserve in every way imaginable as they pass on to the next life.
A celebration of life will be held from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 31st at “Memories Shag Club” in Atlantic Beach for close friends and family.
