Barbara Dawson

Barbara B. Dawson, 73, of Beaufort, NC, passed away Monday, August 31, 2009, at her loving daughter's home, "Linda Dawson" in Chapel Hill, NC.
Barbara was born August 26, 1936, in Alexandria, VA. She was educated at Radford College in VA (now Radford University) and worked as a surgical techologist at Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA. She went on to get her nursing degree at Framingham Union Hospital School of Nursing in Framingham, MA and worked for many years as a registered nurse in hospitals in several states. Her husband was assigned as a Flight Test Engineer at Cherry Point, NC, while they resided in Cherry Point during the 1950's. They lived in numerous states during their 53 years of marriage including almost 30 years in Millis, MA and retired to Beaufort, NC in 1994.
Barbara was involved in a variety of organizations, including being a member of the Millis Historical Commission in Millis, MA. She served on the Board of Elections in Millis, counting votes during elections. She was also an active member of the Garden Club in Beaufort, NC.
Services will be held 2:00 pm Friday, September 4th, at Munden Funeral Home Chapel in Morehead City, NC with interment following in Gethsemane Memorial Park.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Thomas F. Dawson of the home; three children, Sheryl, Thomas, Jr. and Dr. Linda J. Dawson of Chapel Hill, NC; her mother, Helen M. Ryan of Norfolk, VA; two sisters, Betty B. Davis and husband Harvey of Charleston, SC and Doris B. Brady and husband Edward of Norfolk, VA; step-mother, Carrie Y. Barbee of Arlington, VA; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ashby W. Barbee of Arlington, VA and her step-father, Clifford A. Ryan of Norfolk, VA.
The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 pm Thursday at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Barbara's name to the American Cancer Society, 930 B Wellness Dr., Greenville, NC, 27834 or to a favorite animal shelter.
