Albert "Abby" Jones Jr.

June 27, 1944 — October 10, 2023

Morehead City

Albert “Abby” Jones Jr., 79, of Morehead City, North Carolina, passed away the morning of Tuesday, October 10, 2023.

A funeral service to honor Abby’s life will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, October 22nd at Munden Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Gene McLendon and Rev. Ken Yearick. Interment will follow at Bayview Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Abby was born on June 27, 1944, in Mill Creek and adopted when he was 2 weeks old by the late Albert and Laura Bell Jones. He moved to Morehead City where he spent the rest of his life. Although he never forgot his Mill Creek roots, his home was here in Morehead City, especially on the Morehead City waterfront. As a child, he enjoyed hanging out on the waterfront with all his fisherman “buddies”. Being his maternal grandfather was Captain Joe Rose, Abby’s passion for fishing and boats was deep-rooted.

Abby worked and retired as a groundskeeper with the town of Morehead City. To this day, his legacy of pride in his work is often complemented. Even after he retired, he continued to take pride in his hometown and its appearance.

Abby was a social butterfly who knew no strangers. He maintained a core group of friends he would visit often and was always making new friends. His heart was as pure as they come, and his childlike demeanor was accepted and loved by all. Abby is from “Old” Morehead, a simpler time when everyone looked out for each other and maintained friendships throughout life. Abby was loved by many, and his legacy will continue through all the lives he touched and loved back.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his cousins, Jerry Jones and wife Ruth of Morehead City, David Jones and wife Lil of Newport, Tammy Gray of Morehead City, Dana Galloway of East Flat Rock, NC, Susan Stapleton of New Bern, Jennifer Hussey and husband Aaron of Newport, Jessica Smith and husband Josh of Morehead City; as well as many other generations.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Abby’s memory to Hope Mission, 1209 Arendell Street
Morehead City, NC 28557.
